Whereas our legal and constitutional mission and purpose are expressed in the doctrine of Oxford Methodism, "Poor and Minority Justice" is what we do!
Our understanding of social justice reform for the poor and marginalized is based upon a deep and profound respect for human beings (regardless of status) and that human dignity is sine qua non.
We believe that the preaching of the Gospel of Christ must be made manifest in our deeds-- and not simply in our words! And that our deeds include providing legal aid to the socially and economically disadvantaged.
To that end, the Methodist Law Centre has partnered with various church organizations throughout the nation to form the "POOR & MINORITY JUSTICE ASSOCIATION-- LEGAL DEFENSE FUND, INC." which supports several of our legal assistance projects.
The Legal Defense Fund, Inc. endeavors to have a national and international influence on social justice reform, human rights, and the law.
We are an Ecumenical Platform for Ordained Pastors and Lawyers who are interested in promoting Social Justice through real court cases that are pending in either the State or Federal Courts. We handle very difficult Civil Rights, Class Actions, Human Rights, and Social Justice Matters. We work with Law Firms throughout the nation, in order to help attain justice for the poor and vulnerable, whether in the field of Labor and Employment Discrimination, Prisoner's Rights, Post-Conviction Relief, claims under Section 1983, and other related Social Justice Matters, in both State and Federal Court.
The Methodist Law Centre is here to help! What makes our Legal Assistance Teams unique, is that we include the ecumenical Church (e.g., chaplains, ordained pastors, deacons, elders, and bishops of many faith-traditions) on our legal assistance ministry/ investigative support teams. As the voice of the Church to the Bar and the Bench, we aim to be a respected leader in the American legal profession, as well as a major catalyst for human rights and social policy.
Our general philosophy of community service is expressed in Luke 10: 25-37.
The National Association of Christian Ministers (NACM) is an independent council of evangelical Elders who are headquartered in the state of South Carolina and located throughout the United States and globally.
The NACM helps its members with carrying out the Great Commission of the Christian Church (Matt. 28:19) which is to make disciples of all nations through prison fellowship and ministry—i.e., “I was in prison, and ye visited me.” (Matt. 25:36).
The NACM supports its membership in with formulating and administrating jail and prison ministries.
See, below, "How to Start a Jail Visitation Ministry," published by NACM.
A UNIVERSITY, COLLEGE, AND LAW STUDENT CLERKSHIP, INTERNSHIP, & MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME
The Methodist Law Centre at Sante Fe has created the Virgil D. Hawkins Human Rights Law Clinic at Sante Fe in honor of the life and legacy of Virgil D. Hawkins (1906 - 1988).
At the Methodist Law Centre, we understand how important it is to protect the moral, religious, and historical foundations of American constitutional law and jurisprudence, so that our American body politic, the American bar, and American bench do not lose focus of the central objectives and purpose of, inter alia, the Civil War Amendments and subsequent federal civil rights statutes.
We believe that teaching and training the next generation of clergymen, legislators, law practitioners, and judges is vital to maintaining that focus and to preserving the Judea-Christian and constitutional foundations of American democracy.
To that end, the Methodist Law Centre at Sante Fe is committed to partnering with the local churches, public schools of Alachua County, the Sante Fe College, and the University of Florida in order to help teach and train aspiring high school, college, and law students seeking to pursue careers in public policy and administration, law, social services, religious or church services, and education.
Law students who are currently enrolled at the UF Levin College of Law are encouraged to apply for research grants to work as law interns on pending prisoner's rights and civil rights cases by sending inquiries to admin@methodistlawcentre.com .
